Abstract

The title seeks to ask the question, For a nighttime automobile/pedestrian accident as seen from the viewpoint of the driver, was the pedestrian coming from the left-hand side of the driver or from the right-hand side? The purpose of this material is to answer the question based upon 30 years of activity involving 11 consecutive cases with six people killed in which the pedestrian was coming from the left-hand side of the driver. Answers to the questions: Why and what should be done to alleviate this situation, are also given. The magnitude of this type of accident is that there are more than 4,000 deaths in the United States annually. No statistics have been located that speak to the question. A later paper will give the viewpoint of the pedestrian.
