Insulating Devices for Cranes - Test Results

Two types of devices for cranes, the boom cage (guard) and the insulated link, depend on an insulation system for their operation. In order to properly evaluate the potential usefulness of such devices for personnel protection, their insulation systems must be carefully tested for effectiveness, dependability, and reliability over the life of the device and in the environment of expected use. The boom cage (guard) is suggested as protection from accidental contact of the boom of a crane when working alongside, over, or under high-voltage power lines. The insulated link is suggested as protection to hook tender and riggers by limiting current flow if the crane contacts the power line.Published
