On Saturday morning, May 18, 1991, the building custodians entered a synagogue to prepare the sanctuary for Sabbath services. They discovered plaster debris lying over the entire Be ma area. A 12 foot by 14 foot section of the lower level of a two-level ceiling had broken loose from the steel suspension system and had fallen to the floor approximately 35 feet below.
