Abstract

Because of the time and effort required to simulate train braking, a broad estimate of train collision speed or braking distance may be useful to see if a more detailed analysis is justified. This paper presents a series of curves comlating height train speed and emergency stopping distance for a variety of trains. These curves were generated using TBSTMa,n d allow the reconstructionist to broadly estimate train prebraking speed and to WR if further study is warranted. After a brief description of train braking systems, the curves are presented along with an explanation of their application to forensic analysis of train collisions.
